Who Are We? The Harmony Hallers are an independent, vibrant, and exciting group of active adult senior citizens in Southern Prince George’s County…where age is an attitude, Baby Boomers bustin’ loose!
What is our Purpose? The purpose of the Harmony Hallers Senior Citizens is to promote fellowship, fun, and festivities by incorporating social, recreational, cultural, and educational experiences, in a friendly and relaxed manner, while providing outreach efforts, through HHOPE (Harmony Hallers Outreach Program Effort), to the community.
Why HHOPE (Harmony Haller Outreach Program Effort? Blessed with so much, the Harmony Hallers Senior Citizens enjoy activities, trips, events, clubs, and seminars on a weekly basis. It is the group’s enthusiastic desire to instill a cooperative and collective effort in giving back to every component of the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia community.
What does HHOPE strive to do? HHOPE strives to engage in a continuous and passionate effort in providing quality outreach programming to the community. Funds are needed and required to broaden HHOPE’s endeavors by expanding financial resources on a consistent basis.
What programs does HHOPE institute? HHOPE has incorporated into its programming, in an effort to reach every facet of the community, the following Outreach Program Efforts:
Homeless Outreach: During the Thanksgiving season, HHOPE helps prepare over 4500 meals for distribution in the Washington, DC metropolitan area through the DC Central Kitchen. Contributions of much needed linens, articles, and money are collected and presented to the homeless and the culinary school students of the Center of Non-Violence.
Arts Outreach: HHOPE visits, supports, and contributes to the Washington National Cathedral Arts Program in support of continuous special programming, dignitaries, arts, and cultural events at the cathedral. Other arts programs are also considered.
Education Outreach: In support of the Prince George’s County Public Schools, HHOPE has adopted a local school, Henry G. Ferguson Elementary School in Fort Washington, Maryland. An annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Luncheon is held and financial contributions are given to support the chorale department.
Service Outreach: This program is multi-fold. First, HHOPE brings a Holocaust Survivor to the community to speak about personal atrocities experienced during the Holocaust. Secondly, a donation is given to the National Holocaust Museum to support their national efforts. Thirdly, a variety of veterans programs, including the Memorial Day Luncheon are incorporated into the program.
Historical Outreach: The Buffalo Soldiers Foundation service the community in an effort to keep the historical significance of the Buffalo Soldiers alive and flourishing throughout the nation. HHOPE sponsors an annual seminar program and contributes funds their efforts and endeavors.
Youth Outreach: In partnership with the MNCPPC Maryland National Capital Parks and Planning Commission’s Parks and Recreation’s Harmony Hall Pre-School Program, HHOPE provides a weekly reading program for pre-schoolers in order to bring enlightening stories, narratives, and experiences to youngsters.
Medical Outreach: Each year HHOPE participates in the National Walk for the Cure for Breast Cancer on the National Mall by raising funds, joining the Harmony Haller team, walking, and supporting research for a cure to breast cancer.
National Outreach: HHOPE’s participation and first time initiative in the Smithsonian Institute’s Christmas Past Program brings enlightening stories of long-ago Christmas experiences to the community from a senior citizen’s perspective. An ongoing partnership with the Smithsonian provides a variety of programming.
International Outreach: In efforts to reach an international community, HHOPE participates in and contributes to the Chinese Community Center in Washington, DC, by visiting the center, experiencing the cultural cuisine, and donating funds to the Chinese Cultural Center, whose goals include preserving and promoting Chinatown and Chinese culture, history, language, and heritage.
Relief Outreach: In the event of an natural disaster emergency such as earthquake, hurricane, volcano, etc., HHOPE strives to find the most reliable national or international agency in which to support during the trying times via financial contributions of the members. Recently, the Haitian crisis, HHOPE supported and sent hundreds of dollars to the “Doctor Without Borders” campaign.
